Gregg's Gift

Gregg's Gift
Posted on 02/09/2021
Gregg Caringi, Galway High School Class of 1972, was an incredibly talented musician who passed away January 4, 2021. To honor Gregg, his family gifted instruments to the Galway elementary music program along with the following message:

"Gregg’s love of music began when he was a very young boy. His uncle gave him a drum, and his passion for music grew from there. At the age of 13, Gregg decided he wanted a drum kit of his own, so he got a job working on a local farm to earn money to purchase it. He bought a pearl Ludwig drum set that he used his whole life. Gregg loved to share new music with others and introduced his friends and loved ones to bands like Led Zeppelin, Yes, Queen and other rising new musical groups, before anyone had heard of them.

Gregg left Galway following his high school graduation and headed south where he met members of the Allman Brothers Band; Ginger Baker, the drummer from the band Cream; and other famous musicians. Gregg eventually returned home to New York State and raised his family but always found ways to keep music alive. He helped and encouraged young upcoming musicians, worldwide, through social media. He was a huge fan of the band Yes, and he and his daughter traveled together to see them in concert, along with many other bands.

This instrument is Gregg’s Gift. Please play it with all of your heart."

Heartfelt thanks to Gregg's sisters, Carla and Sherri Russo, and sister-in-law, Su Luke, for purchasing two brand new ukuleles for two talented students who show promise playing the ukulele, along with two brand new Turbano Drums and a glockenspiel for the music room.

Joseph Henry Elementary School Music Teacher Mikaela Salem selected Fifth Graders Ian Horton and Amelia Leclerc to receive the ukuleles. She also chose Estelle Hall (fourth grade) and Carter Knapp (first grade) to be ukulele mentors who will help other children learn the instrument.
